infant girls' onesies with the caption "Does this diaper make my butt look big?" Because you can't start that whole negative body image thing too early.

Sometimes I wonder about the intelligence/common sense/sanity of people around here. This evening, I came home from work and checked the mailbox. It was empty. However, sitting on my front porch, in plain view of anyone walking down the street, were the four boxes of new checks I had ordered. They were not wrapped in anything, or concealed in anyway and were quite plainly boxes of checks. If the general size and shape had not made that clear, the return address of a company called "CheckWorks" would have. Who in their right mind leaves that kind of thing sitting around out in the open were anyone could have stolen them? The boxes would have fit in the mailbox. Barring that, what ever happened to leaving a little card in the box notifying the recipient that they had a package to pick up at the post office? It kind of makes me wonder how many people have had checks stolen because the carrier lacked the brains/common sense to do anything other than leave to boxes sit there.

I appear to be acquiring the faintest hints of a social life, and I must confess, I'm finding the whole thought rather daunting. After spending what seems like most of my life either at work or at home raising the kid and trying to keep the house from falling down around our ears, I've actually met a guy I like, who likes me back, and am attempting to do the whole dating thing. But shh, if my managers at work find out, they'll mess around with my schedule again and screw things up. To quote a coworker,"A social life? Are we allowed to have one of those? I thought that was against company policy."

and it looks like the kid is going to have a good year in school--making good grades, likes her teachers, loves her classes--the teachers vote to go on strike. Two and a half months into the school year, no less. Because apparently, someone woke up one morning and realized "Oh shit, the teachers' contract expires today." The school board didn't even begin negotiations until the beginning of the school year, after the contract had already expired. The union has asked for an arbitrator, but that won't happen for a couple of weeks. In the mean time, they've given their required ten day notice of intent to strike. Meaning by the time the state gets around to sending an arbitrator, the union will already be on strike. Sigh.

Took the kid to the Shakespeare Festival last night to see Much Ado About Nothing. It was a rather...odd production. They chose to relocate the setting to a late 19th century Wild West town. Leonato was a saloon/hotel owner, Beatrice was the hotel manager, Benedick and Claudio were cowboys, Don Pedro was a sort of Buffalo Bill type, with long hair and fringed buckskins, and Prince John was the stereotypical bad guy in the black hat, twirling his mustache. Disconcerting to say the least. The actors were trying, not always successfully or consistantly to speak their lines with a sort of Western twang and bits of dialogue were changed to fit the new setting--talk of swords or daggers changed to pistols and bullets, for example. And just when I'd get past the set decorating and get into the performance, the would do something that would jar me out of it again--Square dancing during the revelry at the beginning of the play and after the wedding, or one of the actors yelling "yeehaw." Why DO people feel compelled to muck about with things that can't be improved upon?

Just received word that a young man I know was killed Saturday in Iraq. Jeremiah was 22 and left behind a four year old daughter. All because of the idiot politicians in Washington dragging us into this senseless bullshit. I am just completely at a loss for words.

...but I really don't understand people some times. I work in a retail establishment. At midnight last night a new video game console was released. All well and good. However, we had people who arrived at the store at 8 am Tuesday and camped out waiting for this game to be released at midnight Friday morning. And it wasn't just at the store I work at. The evening news showed footage of people who actually had tents set up in the parking lots of various stores, waiting for this game to become available. Why? I just don't get it. I honestly don't believe there is any material thing that I want badly enough that I would sit for three or four days in a store (without bathing or changing clothes). Can someone please explain this to me?

After about a dozen people nagged at me to start this thing, I finally did. And doesn't it just figure, now that I'm here, be damned if I know what to write. Oh well, at least this first entry is started. I'm sure I'll come up with something to say sooner or later. I usually do. But now I'm going to enjoy the first weekend I've had off in months.
